My FM17 Tactic: 2.0

I’ve been talking about it for a while, and it’s finally here! It’s my second post for FM17 on the tactics I’ve been using in my save. It was initially adopted by RBL during season 3, but I’ve also been using it to great effect with RBS since I took over there too. Of course, both teams playing the same way will only help us to develop players who can easily slot into both of the clubs.

Let me introduce you to “Between Two Shadows”!

“No one likes us…” RBL End of Season 4

When you last saw our progress as we went into the winter break, we were sitting in a good position just behind Bayern Munich in 2nd place. After a shaky start to the season, we’d gone on a good run of form and I was confident we could go on and have a successful season. Could we topple the might of Bayern though?

In the cups, we’d sneaked through our Champions League group and would head into the knockouts to play against Benfica. We were aiming to retain the DFB-Pokal too, after bringing home that trophy last season. My first piece of silverware at the club.

It’s all well and good saying this, but what did we actually manage to achieve in season 4 at RBL?

“No one likes us…” RBL Season 4 Winter Break

Season 3 saw us fall short for the Bundesliga title, but it was a bloody close one. It’s going to come eventually. Believe!

We did bring home my first bit of silverware though, smashing Dortmund in the DFB-Pokal final. A great way to round off what I’d count now as I’m looking back on it, as a successful season.

Season 4 has rolled around, and as you’ll know, there’s an additional club in the mix. With Philipp Lahm taking charge at RBS, this will hopefully enable me to send some fringe players there for gametime, along with sending some younger players to test them in a more challenging environment.

The media have slowly been coming round to the fact that we’re now a bigger club. Last season they predicted us to finish 9th. With our reputation now as the 11th most reputable club in the country secure, this season they’re expecting a 5th place finish. I’m planning an assault on the title again, but have agreed with the board that a Europa League qualification spot will be good enough for them. Again, I’m much better at exceeding expectations, something that’s going to get more difficult as this save goes on.

Let’s get into the pre-season transfers and results from the Hinrunde.

“No one likes us…” End of Season 3

I’ve never promised regular updates on this site, but the second half of season 3 seemed to take longer than usual to play out, so apologies for that. The curtain has now closed on my 3rd season at RBLeipzig though, so it’s time to look back and see what we managed to achieve. I wanted to challenge for the Bundesliga this season, and at the half way point of the season, we were 3 points behind 1st placed Bayern after having only lost 1 game. Things were going well and we were in position to maintain that challenge. Did we though?

“No one likes us…” Season 3 Winter Break

Our Bundesliga finish of 3rd in season 2 was above all board and media expectations and saw us qualify for the riches of the Champions League, of course. At the start of this save, I outlined what I wanted to achieve and when I wanted to achieve it. We’re well ahead of schedule, and as such, I mentioned that after our performance in season 2, in season 3 I want to challenge for the Bundesliga. I hadn’t planned for this until at least season 5. Can we do it?

“No one likes us…” End of Season 2

After the first half of the season, we were sitting 8th in the Bundesliga after a fairly average and uninspiring start to the season. Losing 4 times in those 17 matches had already equaled our total loss tally from the previous season. Our form in the second half of the season had to be better if we wanted to qualify for Europe again. However, remembering that the board only expect us to finish in the top half, there’s plenty of room to overachieve which is exactly what I like to do.

We’d also qualified out of our Europa League group, and had been drawn against English heavyweights, Leicester, in the 1st knockout round. Let’s get into the second half of the season then!

My FM17 Tactic

If you’re here to read about RBLeipzig’s real life tactics, or any proper attempt at recreating the way they’re playing on FM, you’re in the wrong place. There’s plenty of brilliant articles out there analysing what Naby, Werner, Forsberg, Sabitzer and Poulsen are doing offensively and defensively to ensure that they’re probably the most exciting team in world football right now. I’d definitely suggest you have a Google search and read some of them, as any similarity between my FM tactic and the way RBL are playing in the non-FM world is purely accidental.

“No one likes us…” Season 2 Winter Break

A 6th place finish in my, and our, first season in the Bundesliga might seem to some like a bit of a failure when you take into account the resources on offer plus where RBLeipzig are in the table in the non-FM world. I’m taking it as a good achievement though, a building block in the long term aim of eventual Bundesliga, and European domination. More and more I’m coming to realise that probably the key thing to note so far is that we’re really not anywhere near the upper echelons of German football yet in the game. Our reputation is still only national, sitting 19th in the country, and still lower than 2 2.Bundelisa clubs. Putting things very much into perspective.
