We are the ‘Ton: Season 2 Pre-Season

Again, a huge increase in FM playing time over the last few days means that following on from yesterday’s season 1 round-up post, here’s the preview post for season 2 in the the 2016/17 Scottish Championship.

Transfers In

2016-17 Preseason Transfers In

A fair bit of incoming business over the summer of 2016. Lewis Milne arrives on a free transfer, and will compete for one of the central midfield slots. Alex Cooper and Alan Forrest also join on frees, they’re both wide midfield players. McFadzean spent last season on loan with us and arrives on a free. He’s a left sided player and will provide cover down that flank for both the left back and left midfield positions. Scottish football uses the loan market like we’re Wonga and we’ve delved in to secure Olly McBurnie for the season from our friends down in Swansea. He’s a young Scottish striker and will rotate with this man.

Dom Malonga

Splashing out a big-for-this-level £800 a week on wages, but he’s a great striker for the level of football we’re playing at. He didn’t get much of a look in at Hibs last season but he did score 11 goals from 16 starts.

You’ll have spotted that Rangers name is bolded out in the screenshot above, they’ve come on board as our parent club with their promotion to the Premiership and we’ve taken advantage of that by securing a couple of loan moves. Promising goalkeeper, Robby McCrorie comes in for the season as a back up, alongside this guy.

I mentioned before that all I really look at for wide players is to give me a bit of pace down the flanks, and he’s got it in abundance. Good finishing and composure too, he’ll be a real threat out wide and will hopefully be one of the stars of the season.

Finally, one area I really wanted to improve on was the defence. Despite having the 4th meanest defence in the league last season, I always felt there was room for improvement.

Reece Wabara

Former Man City youth player, Reece Wabara joins the club on a free and is a real step up on our offering last season. Still relatively young at 24, his natural position is actually as a full back but I’m opting to play him in the centre of defence, providing us with a bit more pace back there. His probable partner for the season will be this man.

I love scouring Scandinavia for cheap talent, and this guy was a steal by the looks of him. Good tackling, good heading and great pace, and just 20 years old. He’ll either be leading our back line for years to come, or we’ll make a good profit on him to boost the clubs coffers.

Transfers Out

2016-17 Preseason Transfers Out

Just a couple worth mentioning here. Alongside releasing a few fringe and youth players, we’ve actually brought in some money selling players. Sabajo was a rotation option on the wings last season and, taking advantage of his Dutch nationality, we flogged him to Volendam for just over £10k. The big sale of the summer was last years fans player of the season and our top scorer, Bobby Barr. With funds tight, and the club in need of any cash, an offer of £41k from Hibs was accepted on deadline day. The signings of Cooper, Forrest and Aird will hopefully mean we won’t miss him too much!

The League

2016-17 Preseason Odds

Here’s who’ll be contending the Scottish Championship for the 2016/17 season. As you can see, we’re 4th favourites for the league, but the board are expecting us to finish safely in mid-table after our ‘over-achievement’ last season in finishing 3rd. My personal aim? I fancy another crack at the playoffs at least!

Hibs stood in our way of making it to the final promotion playoff matches last season, but their efforts in that match couldn’t take them up and they’re consigned to another season in the second tier. Motherwell drop down to the Championship after finishing bottom of the Premiership. Despite their relegation, they won the Scottish Cup and as such, qualify for the Europa League. They’ll have some early season qualifiers to negotiate which could harm their early season form.

Watch out for the 2016/17 half-way post coming soon!
